How I Turned My Vacation Around In One Simple Maneuver

There I was, trying to fix our 'failed' family vacation, when I noticed my people-pleasing tendencies coming to the surface again. I was feeling guilty for not planning the perfect vacation, even though I knew that Portugal in February is a lot like the Gulf Coast - unpredictable weather, things shut down, and just not the right time to go. But I figured I should have known that in advance, and I was scrambling to salvage things and 'make' everyone happy.

What I needed to do was relax and give myself permission to accept that I had done my best. It's easy for people-pleasers to fall into the trap of feeling responsible for the happiness of those around them, but the truth is that we can't control everything, no matter how hard we try. And that's okay.

People Pleasing

I realized that trying to please everyone was not only going to be exhausting, but also ultimately unfulfilling. It was time to take responsibility for my own needs and desires, and let others own their happiness.

After that, paradoxically, the vacation got way better. We started having fun exploring beaches, laughing about nothing, and went to a local town and did an escape room (totally our thing— we are ‘those people’).

If this sounds familiar to you, you're not alone. People-pleasers often have a hidden need to control others, and we can find ourselves constantly trying to manipulate social situations or outcomes of different circumstances. But the reality is that we can't always control what happens around us - we can only control our own reactions and responses.

I'm going to help you remember what self-love looks like

We guilt ourselves out of our own health way too often. In medical families, it can seem so virtuous, because the physician seems to be working so hard— we don’t want to be a bother. I say, BS! That line of thinking is so sneaky, you have to nip it right in the bud. You put your own oxygen mask on first, sister.
